Intro:

Current increases with increasing voltage during forward bias. Current increases with increasing voltage in the forward direction of the diode up to a certain limit. But current does not increase with increase in voltage in reverse direction. In a p-n junction the p-type semiconductor acts as the anode and the n-type semiconductor acts as the cathode. The forward current is the current that flows when a forward voltage is applied to the diode. Reverse current is the current that flows when reverse voltage is applied.

An electronic device formed when a p-type semiconductor is connected to an n-type semiconductor is called a p-n junction diode. A p-n junction allows current to flow very easily in one direction and not at all in the other. This ability of the p-n junction is used in circuits as a semiconductor diode.

A properly doped crystal diode having a sharp break down voltage is called a Zener diode. If you increase the reverse bias in the crystal diode, once the reverse current suddenly increases too much, that voltage is called the breakdown voltage. An American scientist named Zenner caused the first breakdown of the junction diode.

A p-n junction silicon diode is called a tunnel diode by heavily doping i.e. adding a large amount of impurities. The tunnel diode is a completely new type of semiconductor diode, capable of operating in the 1 to 10 MHz range. It is named tunnel diode because it works on the complex tunneling mechanism used in quantum mechanics.

When a light beam falls on a device with two electrodes, its electrical resistance decreases. The device, with current flowing through it, acts like a normal diode, called a photodiode. When light falls on a semiconductor material, its conductivity increases. This effect is called photoelectric effect.
